What are ORFS hydraulic fittings?

ORFS (O-Ring Face Seal) hydraulic fittings are a type of connection used in hydraulic systems to ensure a leak-proof and reliable connection.

ORFS is a thread standard that uses an O-ring to create a seal between the contact surfaces of the connections, helping to prevent fluid leaks and minimize pressure loss in the system. Initially implemented in the United States, it has since expanded worldwide.

They are manufactured from carbon steel and withstand temperatures from -20°C to +120°C. Some fittings combine ORFS threads with others such as BSPP, NPT, JIC/SAE, metric, etc., to allow for all types of splices and adaptations. A wide range of ORFS-threaded fittings is available, including straight fittings, 45° elbows, 90° elbows, plugs, adapters, tees, unions, bulkhead fittings, etc.

What is the ORFS hydraulic fitting made of?

The ORFS Hydraulic Fitting consists of two main parts: the adapter and the hose.

The adapter has a male thread with a flat seat at the end where an O-ring is placed, and the hose has a female thread with a flat seat where another O-ring is placed. When the two parts are joined and tightened properly, the O-rings are compressed between the contact surfaces, creating a leak-proof seal that prevents fluid leakage.

What are the applications of these fittings?

ORFS hydraulic fittings are used in a wide variety of hydraulic applications, including:

  • high-pressure systems, capable of operating at pressures of up to more than 600 bar
  • motion control systems
  • steering systems
  • braking systems
  • transmission systems.

It is also widely used in the automotive industry, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and other industrial hydraulic equipment.

Are they compatible with other types of hydraulic fittings?

Not directly. ORFS fittings are designed for specific systems, so it's important not to mix them with other types of connections.

Installation recommendations

It is important to follow the manufacturer's recommended installation specifications and procedures to ensure proper assembly and reliable performance of the ORFS hydraulic fitting. This may include using the correct tools and torques, selecting the correct O-rings, and regularly inspecting the connections for leaks or wear.
