ELECTRIC DRIVE
What is an electrically driven pneumatic distributor?
An electrically actuated pneumatic distributor is a device designed to control, direct, or interrupt the flow of compressed air in a pneumatic circuit using an electrical signal. Unlike manual or mechanical distributors, these use a solenoid (a copper coil) which, when energized, generates a magnetic field to move an internal shaft (slide) and change the direction of the airflow.
What voltages are most common for operation?
- 24V DC: The standard in industrial automation for safety and PLC compatibility.
- 110V / 220V AC: Used in older installations or where DC power supplies are not available.
- 12V DC: Common in mobile applications or vehicles.
What maintenance does an electrically driven pneumatic distributor require?
To ensure a long service life (which can reach millions of cycles), it is recommended to:
- Clean air: Use filters to prevent dust particles from damaging internal seals.
- Lubrication: If the distributor is not "lubrication-free", the air must carry a fine mist of oil.
- Condensation control: Water in the air can oxidize the solenoid core or degrade the seals.
How does an electro-pneumatic distributor work?
When voltage is applied to the coil:
An electromagnetic field is generated, the moving core (piston) is displaced, the internal pathways are switched, and the airflow is redirected to the corresponding outlets.
In what applications are they used?
- Industrial automation with PLC
- Production and assembly lines
- Robotic systems
- Remote control of pneumatic actuators
