Hoses for food-grade liquids: Selection and application guide
Hoses for food-grade liquids
Hoses used for food transfer must be made of specific materials suitable for contact with food products, as safety and hygiene are paramount in this sector. Therefore, every component that comes into contact with food or beverages must comply with strict sanitary standards.
We explore the characteristics, differences, and applications of the most common hoses for food-grade liquids:
PVC hose with PVC spiral
It stands out for being a versatile and economical option for many applications in the food industry.
It is made entirely of flexible food-grade PVC and features a rigid PVC spiral integrated into the hose wall that gives it structure and strength.
Despite the internal spiral, it retains its lightness and flexibility, making it easy to handle. Its smooth interior prevents residue buildup and facilitates cleaning. Because it contains no metal components, it is ideal for environments where corrosion or metal contamination is a risk.
It is the perfect solution for suction and pumping of liquids such as drinking water, juices, wine, vegetable oils or milk in low or moderate pressure installations.
PVC hose with steel spiral
It's similar to a PVC spiral hose, but in this case, the reinforcing spiral is made of galvanized steel. The rest of the hose is made of food-grade PVC.
The stainless steel spiral provides greater resistance to crushing, twisting, and higher pressures. This makes it extremely durable and capable of withstanding more demanding working conditions.
It is ideal for demanding suction and discharge applications, such as transferring large volumes of liquids, handling semi-solid or granular products, or in systems where the hose may be subjected to rough handling. It is commonly used in the brewing industry and for transporting flour, grains, or mild chemicals in processing plants.
PVC hose with polyester mesh
It consists of an inner tube and an outer cover made of food-grade PVC, with an intermediate reinforcement of high-tenacity polyester mesh that provides excellent pressure resistance.
It is a very lightweight, flexible, and transparent hose, allowing you to see the fluid flowing through it. Its smooth, non-porous surface makes it easy to clean and disinfect, preventing bacterial growth.
It is primarily designed for pumping food-grade liquids, such as water, soft drinks, or juices, as well as in irrigation systems or compressed air lines in contact with food. It is widely used in slaughterhouses, food laboratories, and the bottling industry.
At Disumtec we are moving forward to offer our customers the option of choosing the hose diameter and also requesting the length according to need, whether a full roll or "cut to size".
