Oil seals provide a seal between the rotating crankshaft and the exterior. Classical oil seals consist of a metal housing which carries the dynamic sealing lip and also provides the static sealing function. The sealing lip of the oil seals is usually made of elastomer material and is in contact with the surface of the rotating shaft. Here, the lip is pressed against the shaft surface by means of a snap ring. As a result of the rotary motion, a sealing gap occurs at the lip edge. Oil can penetrate into this gap, which serves to lubricate the sealing lip.
