Sealing rings are circular mechanical seals designed to prevent leaks or the unwanted exchange of fluids, gases, or solids. The elastomer diaphragm typically has a spring along the vertical edge of the sealing ring to maintain shaft tightness, whether in operation or at a standstill.
This circular spring is responsible for preventing the lip from expanding and ensuring a good seal. There are different types used depending on the application, where temperature, components, or contaminants may vary.
There are metal seals, which have a completely metallic casing and an elastomer inner lip. They also exist with double lips, meaning two lips and two springs to prevent leaks in both directions or bands. The classic seal has an inner lip with a spring and a dust lip to prevent particles or dirt from entering the system. Furthermore, the fluids to be sealed are liquids of variable viscosity. They are not usually gases. Most commonly, these are lubricants, such as oils and greases, but also hydraulic oils (according to DIN 51524), flame-retardant pressure fluids (according to VDMA 24317 and 24320), and even silicone oils with poor lubricating properties.
Oil seals provide a seal between the rotating shaft and the exterior. Traditional oil seals consist of a metal housing that houses the dynamic sealing lip and also provides a static sealing function. The sealing lip of oil seals is usually made of elastomer material and is in contact with the surface of the rotating shaft. Here, the lip is pressed against the shaft surface by a snap ring. As a result of the rotary motion, a sealing gap forms at the lip edge. Oil can penetrate this gap, which serves to lubricate the sealing lip.
The seals can withstand radial velocities of 14 meters per second. They can withstand temperatures of up to 100°C, and even higher depending on the material. They can be made of NBR, Viton, silicone, fluorocarbon, PTFE, and other derivatives. Seals are installed in virtually all types of industries, are easy to replace, and are economical. They come in a wide variety of sizes to fit any system.
