It is designed to control and dissipate kinetic energy in industrial and mechanical systems. It works by harnessing the resistance of a fluid (usually oil) to flow. When an external force acts on the damper, a piston moves within a fluid-filled cylinder.

Being adjustable, the damping force can be adjusted by means of internal mechanisms.
